Summer Reading 2022 has begun! Our theme this year is Camp NPL: Read Beyond the Beaten Path. We are exploring nature, the outdoors and summer camp-style fun activities.
In addition to our Summer Reading Challenge, which you can learn all about on our Summer Reading page, we have tons of fun events on our theme. Here are a few highlights:
- We will jump into Summer Reading with an epic all-ages Kickoff Party Wednesday, June 1 from 3-7pm. Enjoy inflatables, lawn games, tie-dye and popsicles! Kyle Yap will play music from 4-6 and the Healthy in a Hurry food truck will be there from 5-7.
- Explore Backyard Wildlife 101 with Wildlife Prairie Park Friday, June 3! Wildlife Prairie Park will teach us about the animals we see in our backyards and share ways to make living with them fun and rewarding! In addition, educators from the park will have several live animals to show attendees. We have two sessions of this program - one at 9:30 am and another at 11.
- What's summer camp without macramé? Teens and adults can pick up a macramé keychain take and make kit on Tuesday, June 14.
- Take A Peek Beneath the Beaten Path with Sugar Grove Nature Center Friday, June 17! If you think what you see on a nature hike is cool, just wait until you discover what you don't see! Under your feet, in the ground, is a whole world waiting to be found. Bugs, roots, fungi, and a much more emerge from the soil for you to explore!
- Adults can make a DIY bird feeder Wednesday, June 22 or Wednesday, June 29. Support your local birds with a beautiful feeder you made yourself!
- Learn all about Monarch Butterflies and Your Garden Wednesday, July 6. Learn how to create a monarch Way Station with milkweed and other nectar-rich flowers to provide food for the caterpillars and butterflies. Monarchs need your support!
- We will close out Summer Reading Thursday, July 28 at Underwood Park with Camp NPL Field Day. Visit our s'mores station, make some crafts, and play classic field day games like relay races and water balloon toss!
This is just a taste of all the exciting events we have planned for June and July - check out our full summer activity guide here!
We are so excited about our summer camp theme, we made a list of books for all ages that feature camp. Keep reading and we hope to see you at the library soon!
