Event Details

New Philadelphia was an abolitionist village in Pike County, Illinois founded in 1836. Its founders were Frank and Lucy McWorter, making it the first town in the US platted and legally registered by African Americans. Gerald McWorter, the great-great-grandson of Frank and Lucy McWorter, and his wife Kate Williams-McWorter, will present on the historical development of this town and why it is important in American history. The town represents the seven major ways that Black people fought to free themselves from slavery. This presentation will be based on their book, New Philadelphia (2018). Registration is required and space is limited.
